Azerbaijani Delegation Attends AI Standardization Committee Meeting

A plenary meeting of the Technical Committee on Artificial Intelligence (AI) standardization (ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42) of the International Organization for Standardization, was held in Singapore. The event was attended by Bakhtiyar Mammadov, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport and Chair of the Technical Committee on Information and Communication Technologies Standardization (AZSTAND/TK-05), as well as Firuza Bahri, Coordinator of the Technical Committee and Head of Department at the Azerbaijan Institute of Standardization (AZSTAND).

Chaired by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the plenary meeting brought together representatives of national standardization bodies from more than 30 countries, specialists in artificial intelligence systems, as well as delegates from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE SA).

The purpose of the meeting was to promote the practical application of international standards, enhance the efficiency of AI governance frameworks, strengthen the technical and institutional capacities of participants, and expand international cooperation and the exchange of experience among countries.

During the event, the comments and proposals of member countries regarding draft international standards were discussed.

The plenary session participants were also briefed on the “Artificial Intelligence Strategy of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2025–2028,” the “Action Plan for Accelerating Digital Development in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2026–2028,” and the establishment of the Digital Development Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The Azerbaijani representatives also participated in the event within the framework of the “Capacity Building in Artificial Intelligence Governance and Standards” project organized by ISO. Under the project, information sessions were also held on regulatory practices aligned with international and national standards in the field of artificial intelligence governance along with the exchange of knowledge and experience in AI policy and standardization.

The Technical Committee on Artificial Intelligence Standardization (ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42) was established in 2017 with the aim of defining international requirements and criteria for the standardization of artificial intelligence systems. The committee has developed a total of 41 international standards and 50 draft standards. It currently operates through 14 active working groups.
