Online Azerbaijan project
The “Online Azerbaijan” project has been implemented with the aim of enhancing people’s well-being by providing high-speed internet access and user-friendly innovative solutions to individuals and organizations, even in the most remote areas of the country.
The project, based on a public-private partnership model, has been implemented by Aztelekom LLC, Baku Telephone Communications LLC, Azeronline LTD, and Smart Systems Technology.
While the deployment of modern broadband solutions based on GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Networks) technology began in 2017, large-scale implementation, including regional expansion, has been carried out since 2021.
During the “Online Azerbaijan” project, the existing ADSL equipment was replaced with GPON equipment operating on a modern IMS platform, the outdated copper backbone infrastructure was replaced with optical cables, and a new optical distribution network was deployed.
This technology significantly enhances the quality of internet services and enables the delivery of IPTV and other value-added services. GPON, regarded as the latest trend in optical cable technology, technically supports internet speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second. It is inherently resistant to physical degradation and ensures ultra-fast data transmission to end users.
The goal of the “Online Azerbaijan” project was to provide both businesses and households across the country with high-speed, reliable broadband internet through modern technologies. Over the past four years, the number of households with access to stable, high-speed broadband has increased thirteenfold, reaching approximately 3 million — effectively achieving full nationwide broadband coverage. Beyond enhancing internet infrastructure, the project has served as one of the key strategic steps in shaping the country’s digital future.
The project was implemented under the leadership of the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport as part of the Strategic Roadmap for the Development of Telecommunications and Information Technologies. Over the past two years, the country’s average annual broadband internet speed has increased by a factor of 1.4, surpassing 66 Mbps as of January 2024.
The efforts undertaken within the project have also received high international recognition. During the world’s leading mobile technology event — the Mobile World Congress (MWC) — Aztelekom LLC was honored with the “Fastest Fixed Network” award. The award was presented by Ookla®, the global leader in internet speed testing and analysis.
