Azerbaijan approves Action Plan for transition to digital radio broadcasting
“Action Plan for the introduction and development of digital radio broadcasting in the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan” was approved by Order No. 818 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated 7 October 2023.
In connection with the transition to digital radio broadcasting, the introduction of the DAB+ digital radio standard in the European Union and other developed countries has necessitated the adoption of appropriate measures in connection with the transition to this standard in Azerbaijan.
The purpose of this transition is to ensure digitalization in the field of radio broadcasting, efficient use of the frequency resources and introduction of modern and better quality radio broadcasting in the country, organization of new types of digital information services, as well as strengthening terrestrial radio broadcasting.
Test broadcasting of digital radio of DAB+ standard has been conducted in Baku city and Absheron peninsula since 26 August 2019.
As a result of the implementation of the approved Action Plan, it is planned that by 2026 digital radio broadcasting will cover about 70 per cent of the country’s cities and regional centers, as well as highways, and in 2027 – 99.6 per cent of the country’s territory. This process will result in a complete transition to digital radio broadcasting in the country.
The transition will take into account the number of cars equipped with digital radio, the availability of DAB+ radio receivers on sale and the level of public awareness.
At the same time, the order provides for the adoption of appropriate measures to promote the import of digital radio equipment into the country and to support to television and radio companies.
