Strategic Importance of the Middle Corridor Highlighted at International Conference in Greece
Azerbaijan was represented at an international conference dedicated to transport connectivity in the Balkan and Black Sea regions, held in the city of Patras, Greece. Alish Ismayilov, an analyst at the International Transport Forum (ITF) under the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and a seconded representative of Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Digital Development and Transport to the ITF, delivered a speech during a session held within the framework of the conference.
During his speech, Alish Ismayilov noted that global supply chains have faced significant challenges in recent years, further increasing the importance of alternative and resilient transport routes between Europe and Asia. In this context, the Middle Corridor is emerging as a strategic, economically efficient, and sustainable connectivity route linking Europe and Asia.
It was also emphasized that strengthening international connectivity has been one of the key priorities of Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the ITF for the 2025–2026 period. The Middle Corridor has held a special place on the organization’s agenda, and discussions on this topic are expected to continue in the future.
During the speech, reference was also made to the OECD/ITF report titled “Realising the Potential of the Middle Corridor.” The report identifies key priorities, including strengthening regional economic integration, simplifying border and transit procedures, increasing investments in port and railway infrastructure, and expanding cooperation between the public and private sectors.
In conclusion, it was noted that the ITF Work Programme for 2026–2027 includes new studies focused on freight transport efficiency and digitalization, and member states as well as partner organizations were invited to further enhance cooperation in these areas.
