The final reporting event of the Online Azerbaijan megaproject was held on 10 March. The event was attended by Shahin Babayev, Executive Director of Azerbaijan Transport and Communications Holding, Hasan Omarov, Acting General Director of Aztelekom LLC, Natalia Mochu, Regional Director of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), as well as representatives of regulatory bodies and experts in the field.
The event provided extensive information on the project implementation, results achieved and future prospects.
In his opening speech, Shahin Babayev said: “The Online Azerbaijan project aimed at providing both businesses and households across the country with high-speed, fixed broadband Internet through modern technologies. As a result of joint efforts of many partners, we have managed to set up a broadband Internet network in the country. The project of complex structure and strategic importance was implemented in stages. Over the past 4 years, the number of households with fixed broadband, high-speed Internet access in the country has increased 13 times and reached about 3 million. As a result, the country is fully covered with fixed broadband Internet access. In addition to improving the Internet infrastructure, this project was one of the strategic steps that shaped the country’s digital future”.
The project was implemented under the leadership of the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport as part of the “Strategic Roadmap for the Development of Telecommunications and Information Technologies”. Over the past two years, the average annual broadband Internet speed in the country has increased 1.4 times and, as of January 2024, the figure exceeded 66 Mbps.
The event continued with a panel session dedicated to the theme “A New Stage of Digitalization”. The session discussed the opportunities created for the introduction of innovative technologies, the expansion of cloud services and the development of e-government platforms.
It should be noted that the efforts made under the project have received considerable international recognition. Thus, on 5 March, Aztelekom LLC was awarded the “Fastest Fixed Network” award within the framework of Mobile World Congress (MWC), the most prestigious exhibition of mobile technologies in the world. The award was presented by Ookla, a global leader in internet testing and analysis.
