NAM member states’ ministers responsible for information and communications meet in virtual format
A virtual meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member states’ ministers responsible for information and communications was held on “ICT infrastructure development as part of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.
The meeting, organized by the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport within the framework of Azerbaijan’s chairmanship in the Non-Aligned Movement, aimed at strengthening cooperation between the organization’s member states and sharing experiences in ICT infrastructure development. Participants shared their latest developments and innovations in ICT sector, discussed effective practices.
In his opening speech, Minister of Digital Development and Transport Rashad Nabiyev informed about the measures taken to develop ICT infrastructure in Azerbaijan.
“Given the growing demand, we continue investing in broadband infrastructure in the country with the introduction of GPON technology. Today 39% of households (over 1 million homes) in Azerbaijan have access to fibre broadband internet and we plan to provide all households with access to high quality broadband internet before the end of 2024,” the minister said.
At the event, Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union Tomas Lamanauskas, as well as ministers and deputy ministers responsible for information and communications of the Non-Aligned Movement member states, spoke about the challenges facing the ICT sector. They also shared their experiences related to the work done towards the implementation of the SDGs and innovations.
The meeting focused on the rapid development of the ICT sector and the importance of implementing the SDGs. It was emphasized that strengthening and developing ICT infrastructure plays an important role in the successful implementation of the SDGs.
During the event, head of the Non-Aligned Movement Youth Organization Ordukhan Gahramanzade also delivered a speech at the event. He provided participants with detailed information on the organization’s activities.
The meeting concluded with the adoption of a Joint Declaration of the ministers responsible for information and communications of the Non-Aligned Movement member states.
