Event  related to international civil aviation  held  within COP29

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) kicked off in Baku on 11 November. A delegation led by President of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Salvatore Sciacchitano is taking part in COP29.

The session “Implementing the Clean Energy Transition for International Aviation in Support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals”, moderated by ICAO Secretary- General’s Envoy Jane Hupe to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, presented ICAO’s recent achievements in addressing the impact of international civil aviation on climate change.

The event also provided information on the work done and planned activities on the transition to sustainable  aviation fuel (SAF), low carbon aviation fuel (LCAF) and other clean forms of aviation energy as part of the Long Term Global Aspirational  Goal (LTAG) to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The session reiterated the call for stakeholders to join forces in harnessing clean energy and capacity building for the future of aviation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for the aviation sector.

During the event, Elmin Mammadov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in his speech informed about the environmental priorities of the economic policy of our state, emphasizing the value of long-term effective cooperation with ICAO in the field of aviation.

Following the event, the State Civil Aviation Agency under the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan and ICAO signed the ACT-SAF partnership document on support, capacity building and training in the field of sustainable aviation fuels.

The document was signed by Nazim Ziyadov, Deputy Director of the State Civil Aviation Agency, and Nicholas Rallo, ICAO Regional Director  for Europe and North Atlantic Office (on behalf of the ICAO Secretary-General).

The ACT-SAF partnership will be an important support in achieving our country’s greenhouse gas emission reduction goals and will play a positive role in enhancing environmental development capacity, learning and applying best practices.
