Deputy Minister participated in discussions on increasing use of nuclear energy within COP29

Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan Samir Mammadov took part in the event entitled “Developing efforts to triple the use of nuclear energy by 2050” as part of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) taking place in Baku.

Samir Mammadov noted in his speech that discussions on climate change will contribute to deepening cooperation on a global scale.

The Deputy Minister emphasized that Azerbaijan is determined to become one of the leading countries in the field of renewable energy. He informed the participants about our country’s plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent by 2050 and increase the share of renewable energy in electricity generation to 30 per cent by 2030.

It was noted at the event that in this aspect Azerbaijan is interested in nuclear energy, especially in innovative nuclear technologies such as small modular reactors (SMRs), expressing its commitment to the clean energy transition, realizing the responsibility of its commitments under the Paris Agreement. It was emphasized that the Government of Azerbaijan supports the joint analysis of the potential role of nuclear power, including SMRs, in the clean energy transition under the Atoms4Netzero initiative.

At the end of his speech, Samir Mammadov on behalf of the Government of Azerbaijan invited other countries to join the development of global cooperation for a rapid transition to clean energy. He stated that Azerbaijan is ready to work together on projects that contribute to activities in this direction.

The event continued with a panel session with the participation of Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi.
