Briefing  held in Geneva on Green Digital Action initiative to be organized during COP29

On 24 October, a briefing was organized for heads and diplomats of diplomatic missions of a number of foreign countries accredited in Geneva.

The briefing was held by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva, as well as the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport (MDDT) on the Green Digital Action initiative to be held during COP29.

The briefing was attended by representatives of about 30 diplomatic missions operating in Geneva.

Tomas Lamanauskas, ITU Deputy Secretary-General, Galib Israfilov, Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan in Geneva, Bakhtiyar Mammadov, Deputy Chief of Staff of MDDT, and Elmar Mammadov, Head of  Economic Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spoke and informed the briefing participants on the importance of the mentioned initiative.

The event also featured a presentation on the initiative and the preparations for the high-level event to be held under this framework, planned work and upcoming issues and priorities.

The briefing highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts to harness the transformative potential of digitalization to enhance action on climate change and sustainability.

It was reported that Digitalization Day will be held on 16 November for the first time ever at COP29. This, in turn, will further stimulate discussions on the indispensable role of digital technologies in tackling the climate crisis and encourage collaborative action in this regard.

On the same day, a high-level roundtable on Green Digital Action will be held, and a Green Digital Action Declaration will be adopted as an outcome document. The declaration will serve as a framework for cooperation to enhance action on climate change and sustainability, while mitigating the negative environmental impacts of rapid digitalization.
