Azerbaijani delegation attends ITF Summit
On 22–24 May, Leipzig (Germany) hosted a summit of the International Transport Forum (ITF) dedicated to the topic of green transport (ITF Summit 2024). It should be noted that the ITF has more than 1,500 participants, including transport ministers and representatives of a number of international organizations. Azerbaijan, the second vice-president of the forum, was represented for the first time by a national pavilion at the exhibition organized by the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport and with the support of COP29 Operating Company within the framework of the summit.
Our country was represented at the event by a delegation headed by Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport Rahman Hummatov.
Speaking at the summit, Deputy Minister Rahman Hummatov informed that 2024 was declared by President Ilham Aliyev as the “Year of Solidarity for a Green World” in the country. According to him, COP29 event will be held in Azerbaijan in November this year.
The Deputy Minister informed the participants of the event about the development of Middle Corridor, declaring the territories of Karabakh, East Zangezur and Nakhchivan as a zone of green energy, micromobility projects being implemented in the country, full electrification of the bus fleet through local production in the near future, as well as the work done in the direction of greening public transport.
Bilateral meetings were held with delegations of a number of countries and international organizations within the framework of the summit. Current cooperation and future prospects were discussed in detail at the meetings.
The national pavilion set up at the exhibition provided detailed information on holding COP29 in Azerbaijan this year. In addition, information was presented on the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in the country’s transport sector, projects being implemented within the Mobility Transformation Programme in Azerbaijan and the upcoming work.
It was noted that a digital twin of Baku city has been created. Planning of the latest infrastructure projects, optimization of regular route lines is carried out on the basis of this digital twin.
It should be noted that currently the International Transport Forum has 69 member states. The Republic of Azerbaijan became a full member of the ITF in 1998. At the meeting of the Council of Transport Ministers held within the framework of the summit last year, Azerbaijan was unanimously elected president of the ITF for 2025–2026 for the first time in its history.
