Azerbaijan Submits Its Candidacy for ITU Council Membership
A meeting of the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is being held in Geneva, Switzerland. Azerbaijan is being represented at the ongoing event by a delegation led by Samaddin Asadov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport.
At the Council meeting, discussions focused on the report of the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-25) held in Baku, preparations for the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference to be held this year, as well as the World Radiocommunication Conference and the Radiocommunication Assembly scheduled for 2027. The Strategic and Financial Plan for 2028–2031, along with other matters, was also in focus.
For your information, Azerbaijan has put forward its candidacy for ITU Council membership for the 2027–2030 term, along with the candidacy of an Azercosmos representative for membership in the Radio Regulations Board.
On the sidelines of the Council meeting, Deputy Minister Samaddin Asadov met with ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin. During the meeting, information was provided on the measures undertaken in Azerbaijan in the field of digital development, and opportunities for expanding existing cooperation were discussed.
The Deputy Minister also held bilateral meetings with Ömer Fatih Sayan, Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Türkiye; Doszhan Musaliyev, Deputy Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development of Kazakhstan; and Xiong Jijun, Deputy Minister of Industry and Information Technology of China.
These meetings were significant in terms of presenting Azerbaijan’s position in the field of digital development at the international level, expanding the exchange of experience in artificial intelligence and innovation, as well as establishing new bilateral and multilateral cooperation opportunities.
It should be noted that prior to the ITU Council meeting, an informal ministerial meeting was held. Discussions covered the use of emerging technologies by member states, increasing private sector participation, improving financing models, renewing cooperation with the United Nations, and other related issues.
