The 6th session of UNESCAP Committee on Transport held

The 6th session of the Committee on Transport of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) was held. This event is held every two years as a top-level meeting of the organization in this field. Due to the pandemic, this year’s session was held via videoconference.

The event, which lasted two days, discussed the implementation of the first phase (2017-2021) of the UNESCAP Regional Action Programme on Sustainable Transport Connectivity in Asia and the Pacific and current challenges in this area, as well as accelerating transport transformation activities to achieve the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the experience of countries in the relevant field.

The meeting was attended by representatives of 53 member countries, as well as officials of the UNESCAP Secretariat and other international organizations and institutions.

At the event, the Republic of Azerbaijan was represented by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies, Baku International Sea Trade Port CJSC and Azerbaijan Railways CJSC.

Emil Ahmedov, official of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies, spoke at the session entitled “Sustainable Transport Connectivity”. He provided detailed information on our country’s policy for the development of the transport sector, ongoing activities, projects of international importance, the initiator and participant of which is Azerbaijan, achievements, as well as the work done to ensure the sustainability of transport in the region during the pandemic.

In conclusion, the final report on the event was adopted. The document contained a number of recommendations for consideration by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and possible actions towards their solution.
