Minister Ramin Guluzade meets with his Iranian counterpart via video link

A virtual meeting was held between Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies Ramin Guluzade and Minister of Roads and Urban Development of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Eslami.

The meeting was also attended by representatives of the foreign ministries of the two countries.

The sides exchanged views on the current state and prospects for cooperation between the two countries in the field of transport.

In the negotiations, the scheduled work on the construction of a new highway bridge and a pedestrian crossing over the Astarachay was also discussed. As a result of the meeting, an agreement was reached to accelerate work on the approval of the draft intergovernmental memorandum of understanding in order to establish a legal framework for the construction of the bridge.

It should be noted that in recent years, the volume of bilateral and transit cargo transportation between Azerbaijan and Iran by road has increased. With regard to the expiration of the service life of the existing road bridge across Astarachay, at the section of the border checkpoint Astara (the Republic of Azerbaijan) – Astara (the Islamic Republic of Iran), there is a need to build a new highway bridge and pedestrian crossing over the Astarachay.

During the video meeting, they also discussed transport links between the two countries, the North – South Transport Corridor, projects implemented in the territory of Iran and the development of cargo transportation in the future.

In conclusion, the sides expressed hope that the online discussions held during the COVID-19 pandemic will soon be replaced by traditional meetings.
