Minister hands medal to schoolgirl who took third place in international competition

For 48 years, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) together with the postal administrations of member countries of the organization has been holding epistolary essay contest (writing in the form of a letter) among schoolchildren.

A competition launched in Azerbaijan in February of this year jointly by Azerpost LLC of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies and the Ministry of Education has successfully come to an end. A total of 20 722 essays were submitted for the contest. Two topics were presented for this year’s contest: “Write a letter about your hero” (for schoolchildren under 15) and “I’m proud to be Azerbaijani”. The first topic was proposed by the UPU, the second –  by Azerpost LLC.

The 8th grade student of Educational Complex No. 132-134 in Baku Leyla Elnur gizi Dadashova won the nomination for the topic proposed by the UPU. Her essay was sent to the UPU headquarters in Bern, Switzerland on behalf of the Republic of Azerbaijan. According to the conditions of the contest, the essays from the UPU member countries are submitted to the jury, formed by UNESCO. As a result, three winners were determined. It is gratifying that Azerbaijani schoolgirl Leyla Dadashova became one of the winners of the first 3 places, who won the bronze medal. Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies Ramin Guluzade handed her the medal.

Note that an Azerbaijani schoolgirl devoted her essay to Stephen Hawking, one of the most famous theoretical physicists of our time. The essay provides an example of a scientist who has achieved great success, despite the loss of ability of movement and speech. The reason why the author addressed this issue is that her brother suffers from autism syndrome.

It is to be recalled that Azerpost LLC has been a member of the UPU since 1993. Leyla Dadashova is the first Azerbaijani to be winner in this contest held by the UPU for 48 years.
