Implementation of important changes proposed on Icherisheher and Aziz Aliyev Street begins

A special project is being implemented in the corner where historical sights that form the image of the capital of Azerbaijan are concentrated. Thus, as part of the implementation of the Mobility Transformation Program in Baku, a proposed project concerning the central part of the capital – Icherisheher and Aziz Aliyev Street – will be launched on 27 October.

The project approved by the Transport Coordination Council envisages restriction of vehicle traffic from the intersection of Istiglaliyyat Street with Azerbaijan Avenue to Aziz Aliyev Street, creation of landing and disembarkation points for tourist buses in the square in front of Gosha Gala Gate and complete restriction of vehicle traffic on Aziz Aliyev Street. The entry of all vehicles into Icherisheher will be restricted, except for vehicles used for supply chain management of residents and diplomatic representatives located here, operational, technical, housing and communal services, and enterprises. These vehicles will be allowed to enter Icherisheher from the side of Neftchilar Avenue.

It is planned to create a pedestrian zone and lanes for micromobility on the territory.

It should be noted that on the streets and avenues of Baku, especially in the central part of the city, the flow of vehicles and pedestrians, as well as the density of traffic has increased many times in recent years, which creates a serious obstacle to the mobility of the population and becomes a source of danger for road users.

The intensity of traffic flow on Istiglaliyyat Street, the movement of vehicles to the square in front of Gosha Gala and from there to Neftchiler  Avenue along Aziz Aliyev Street further complicates the situation and even affects the traffic flow on Neftchiler Avenue. In addition, traffic and pedestrian flows are constantly mixed in the mentioned square, which significantly hampers mobility.

The recent deplorable situation in this part of the city has repeatedly become a topic of discussion among the public and in the media.

As part of the implementation of the Mobility Transformation Program in Baku, aimed at ensuring the convenience of movement for residents and guests of the city, experts from all relevant institutions have studied the situation in this area in detail, monitored the intensity of traffic for a long time and carried out modelling using special software.

Restriction of vehicle access contributes to the comfort and safety of residents and guests of Icherisheher by reducing the number of vehicles, noise and rubbish.

The project, which was designed taking into account the experience of major cities around the world, will, among other factors, contribute to the preservation of a rare jewel of the capital, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and prevent the infrastructure here from being rapidly washed away.

The establishment of boarding and disembarkation points for tourist buses in the square in front of Gosha Gala Gate will make it easier for visitors of Icherisheher to reach this place.

The restriction of vehicle traffic on Aziz Aliyev Street will extend the pedestrian zone starting from Nizami Street, connecting the micromobility lines to the existing lane on Istiglaliyyat Street and extending it towards Seaside National Park.

Thanks to this, a huge pedestrian zone will be created in the central part of the city. We would like to remind you that for the first time a project of complete restriction of vehicle traffic was realized around Khagani Garden. This territory after a large-scale reconstruction has completely turned into a pedestrian zone. Currently, the process of creating such a zone continues on the square in front of the 28 May metro station.
