Girls in ICT Day in Azerbaijan

In Azerbaijan, as in the rest of the world, the International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated annually on the fourth Thursday of April. The goal of the Girls in ICT Day, established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), is to attract girls into the field of information and communication technologies.

 

Within the framework of the international event held under the overall theme “Expand Horizons, Change Attitudes”, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies holds a number of events in this connection to support the enhancement of the role of women in the field of ICT.

 

Thus, an event dedicated to the Girls in ICT Day has been organized in Shamakhy City Art Center.

 

The event was co-organized by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies, Ministry of Education, Shamakhy Region Executive Authority, Azerbaijani Women in ICT Club - FEMMES DIGITALES, STEP IT Academy, Barama Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center and Baku Office of the United Nations Development Programme.

 

At the event, which was held with the participation of about 70 schoolchildren in Shamakhy region, information was provided on the importance of information technologies, the importance of education in this area and the opportunities for employment.

 

Then a training was held on the formation of innovative ideas for the startup projects with the participation of young girls. After familiarizing themselves with the educational material provided by the mentors, the girls divided into teams and presented their ideas to the experts. After evaluating projects from the point of view of their future implementation. Then the participants were given souvenirs and certificates.

 

At the same time, coding classes were also organized, during which participants visually familiarized themselves with the programming process.

 

Furthermore, training on “Women in ICT: Opportunities and Perspectives” was jointly organized by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies, AREA Robotics and Engineering Academy and chip.az LLC.

 

Trainings on “Modern trends in IT”, “Business on social networks”, “Career opportunities for girls in ICT”, “Business opportunities in robotics”, “Development perspectives of robotics in Azerbaijan” were organized.

 

At the training, it was noted that in recent years, the activities of the Girls in ICT Day have significantly expanded their scope, turning from one-day events into global and action programs designed to train girls to work with ICT throughout the year.

 

It was stressed that ICT is one of the key factors in ensuring gender equality and empowering women. With access to these technologies, girls and women can easily take advantage of the opportunities to create new jobs and develop entrepreneurship activities.

 

At the same time, it was pointed out that the Girls in ICT Day is a global initiative aimed at contributing to bridge the digital divide by encouraging girls and young women to choose the direction and profession in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
