Azercosmos announces science competition on remote observation of the Earth’s surface

Azercosmos, the space agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, which operates under the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport announces the next science competition on remote observation of the Earth’s surface.

The main purpose of the competition is to make images from Azersky satellite available in Azerbaijan and accelerate the development of projects implemented using satellite imagery in the country.

The competition is open to students, teachers, research institutes, individual researchers, state-run enterprises and representatives of the private sector engaged in research.

By joining this project, thanks to the capabilities of the Azersky satellite, participants can visualize their ideas related to agriculture, ecology and environmental protection, monitoring areas affected by drought and desertification, efficient use of water resources and sustainable energy sources, urban planning and defining touristic routes in their research.

Participation in the competition is free of charge. The application deadline is November 30, 2022. After evaluating the proposals in accordance with the conditions of the competition, the images received from the Azersky satellite will be presented to the participants free of charge. Those, who will take the first three places in the competition, will receive money rewards of AZN5000, AZN3000 and AZN1500 respectively.

It should be noted that the science competition on remote observation of the Earth’s surface is of particular importance in terms of implementing the commitments arising from “Azerbaijan 2030: National Priorities for Socio-Economic Development” and “Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, approved by the UN. This competition combines the benefits of space and the opportunities it creates in our daily lives, as well as initiatives such as observing and preparing for environmental change through satellite imagery, and promoting food security through proper monitoring of agriculturally used areas. It should be emphasized that the era of digitalization also offers new perspectives for scientific research. Supporting scientific work in our country with the capabilities of the space industry enables scientists and researchers to meet the global challenges of the modern times.

The initiative “Encouraging Remote Earth Observation Services” launched by Azercosmos in 2016 will give a serious impetus to the development of this sector in Azerbaijan.
