Azerbaijani carriers’ share in international road transport market increased

The State Road Transport Service under the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport has carried out important work to develop Azerbaijan’s international road transport market, encourage local carriers and increase their market share. The number of Azerbaijani carriers and their market share have increased. The vehicle fleet used in transport has expanded, and access to permission forms has become easier.

In the first 6 months of last year, the number of carriers amounted to 71. In the corresponding period of this year, this figure reached 204. In the first half of 2021, the number of vehicles involved in international road transport amounted to 2,710, and in the corresponding period of this year, it increased to 7,208. An increase of 2.7 times was recorded for both indicators. In general, 29.7% more permission blanks were issued to carriers for January–June 2022 than for the corresponding period of 2021. This represents an increase of 22.4% in the activity of Azerbaijani carriers in the international road transport market.

An increase of 4% was recorded in the bilateral road transport market with the countries having most international road transport with Azerbaijan. When compared to January–June last year, the participation of Azerbaijani carriers in transportation in these directions has increased by 6,815 units, while the participation of foreign carriers has decreased by 2,234 units. Azerbaijani carriers’ market share in neighboring countries increased by 7.7% in the direction of Turkiye, by 10.2% in the direction of Georgia, by 5.4% in the direction of Russia, and by 7.2% in the direction of Iran.

If we compare the first half of 2021 with the similar period of 2022, Azerbaijan has seen a 3.2% growth in the international road transport market. There has also been a marked increase in the share of local carriers in this market. Thus, the market share between Azerbaijan and partner countries is approaching parity. Last year the share of local carriers amounted to 39.5%, and in 2022, this figure amounts to 47%.

In the first half of 2021, Azerbaijani carriers conducted 8,242 transportation services to third countries (from a foreign country to another foreign country). In the corresponding period of 2022, this figure amounted to 12,726. This, in turn, represents a 54.4% increase in the export of these services to third countries.

The measures are being taken to develop the international road transport market. Thus, the rules of admission for international road transport was approved by the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of 8 April 2022. The application of these rules will have a positive impact on the development of the international road transport market in Azerbaijan.
