Azerbaijan to host ITU World Telecommunication Development Conference next year

On 4 June, the annual session of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council began its work in Geneva (Switzerland). Our country is represented at the session by the delegation of the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport.

During the discussions held within the session, the hosting of the organization’s World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC) in Azerbaijan in 2025 was approved.

It should be noted that for the first time in the CIS region Azerbaijan was given the opportunity to hold this event.

The WTDC is one of the largest and most important ITU events held every four years to address cybersecurity, digital inclusion, ICT applications, innovation, ICT statistics and indicators, ICT regulation and development topics in other similar areas, projects and programmes. The event aims to bring together world leaders, experts and other stakeholders in the field to discuss and develop strategies for the future development of ICT.

Samir Mammadov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport, who spoke during the discussions, informed the participants of the event about the development of ICT infrastructure in the country, the work done in the field of digital transformation and the achievements made.

The deputy minister spoke about educational projects implemented in the ICT sphere in the country. “Initiatives such as Technest, Technion and Digital Academy enhance the skills and knowledge of young Azerbaijanis needed in the era of digital technologies,” Mammadov said.

Samir Mammadov informed that the subsystem “Electronic Document Management” was developed, which simplified the secure exchange of documents between state bodies in real time.

The deputy minister also added that MyGov, implemented by the Innovation and Digital Development Agency, is one of the most important projects in terms of involving citizens in the digitalization process. “MyGov plays the role of a “single window” for each state institution, allowing them to apply for public services in an online form without the need to use separate portals or registration,” Mammadov emphasized.

Samir Mammadov said that Azerbaijan, which has successfully held many important international events, attaches great importance to the commitments in the field of telecommunications and global dialogue in the field of ICT.

Following the discussions, the decision to hold the WTDC in Azerbaijan was unanimously approved by the Council.

The approval of Azerbaijan to host such a prestigious event is the result of the country’s growing reputation in telecommunications, as well as its successful cooperation with ITU over the years.
