Azerbaijan joins Intergovernmental Agreement on Dry Ports

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has approved the law on the country’s accession to the Intergovernmental Agreement On Dry Ports with  corresponding statements and reservations.

The Intergovernmental Agreement On Dry Ports was signed on 7 November  2013 in Bangkok (Thailand) during the Forum of Asian Ministers of Transport, organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), and entered into force on April 23, 2016.

The creation of dry ports of international importance  plays an important role in integrating  different modes of transport, as well as  between the  Asian Highway and the Trans-Asian Railway networks, reducing border-crossing and transit delays and associated costs, facilitating the use of energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable means of transport and developing international  intermodal transport and logistics system.

It will also create new opportunities for the growth and establishment of development clusters in inland areas  and addressing the specific needs of landlocked, transit and coastal states.At the same time, it will  open up new opportunities for the cooperation with international and regional  financing  institutions, multilateral  and bilateral donors to consider providing financial and technical support for the development and operation of dry ports of international importance.

It should be noted that Azerbaijan has been a member of UNESCAP since July 31, 1992. The country is actively involved  in a number of projects implemented within the framework of the commission in various fields, including transport, and  constantly participates in its events.
