Azerbaijan has established a strong partnership with the World Bank.

On September 25, a ceremony was held to mark the 25th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s accession to the World Bank.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s membership in the World Bank, postage stamps specifically issued by the Government of Azerbaijan were signed and sealed. The stamps were signed and sealed by Deputy Prime Minister Abid Sharifov and World Bank’s Regional Director for the South Caucasus, Mercy Tembon.

Stressing the importance of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the World Bank, Deputy Prime Minister Abid Sharifov spoke about the loans  allocated by World Bank  to our country and its projects implemented. In his speech, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the issue of road  construction: “We all knew how the roads were in Azerbaijan,  the oil state did not have roads. Under the President’s instruction, road with a length of 10 thousand kilometres  able to meet the modern standards was built. Most of the funding  allocated was spent on road development .”

Company Azemarka has issued in our country a postage stamp dedicated to the 25th anniversary of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the World Bank. The print run of these stamps will make up 25,000 copies. These stamps will become the symbol of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the World Bank,” said  Deputy Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies Elmir Velizade.

He noted that a joint project on increasing the financial service capacity of Azerpost was successfully implemented in 2005 with the World Bank with the view of  increasing  the access of the population to banking and financial services and improving financial services in the country.

The World Bank has prepared a booklet about this project in Azerbaijan and distributes it to all countries as a positive example. “For us, it is  very welcome that  using wide opportunities in the world , Azerbaijani post  provides  postal services to the public, money transfers, maintaining correspondent accounts of financial institutions, debit  loans cards, issuance of postal checks and other services across the country through a wide network based on  the licenses obtained  from the Central Bank. This very project has created new opportunities for Azerpost LLC  to provide financial services,” the Deputy Minister said.

The event featured a video dedicated to the 25th  anniversary  of  partnership between Azerbaijan and the World Bank.

Head of the World Bank Azerbaijan Office Naveed Naqvi made a presentation at the event. He reported  on the completion of 41 projects implemented by the World Bank  with Azerbaijan.

The organization  provides  support to the projects to improve the water management system, solid waste management and improvement of living conditions for refugees and internally displaced persons in Azerbaijan.
