‘Public Internet’

The “Public Internet” project was launched in Baku on March 19, 2017 in order to boost the local tourism and allow city residents and guests to efficiently spend their leisure time.

Under the project, the “Free Wi-Fi” service was provided in major parks and avenues of the capital. This initiative drew the attention of both local residents and tourists.

The statistics shows that the number of users of the “Free Wi-Fi” service hit the highest point of about 10,000 people in the summer months when the tourist flow reached its peak. The total number of connections is about 6 million.

Baku Telephone Communications Limited Liability Company (Baktelecom) provided the population with free internet access within the framework of the “Public Internet” project, which was launched at the initiative of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies.

Under the project, the “Free Wi-Fi” service was initially provided at Seaside National Park, including State Flag Square, and State Historical-Architectural Reserve ”Icherisheher”.

During the implementation of the project, in order not to cause damage to the design of architectural monuments requiring a special approach, works in the areas of their location were carried out with special care, under the supervision of specialists.

Based on the world experience, the “Free Wi-Fi” service, as the broadband (high-speed) internet network, was equally distributed among users. No speed limits were applied to the service. So, the user can use freely the internet for one hour starting from the moment of connection to it.

Additionally, the user can use the free service three times a day.

The scope of the project has been continually expanded over the past period.

Given the possible influx of foreign tourists to the country on the eve of the IV Islamic Solidarity Games, the “White City” area of Baku Boulevard, Sahil Garden and the Park of Heydar Aliyev Center were provided with free internet.

Given the possible influx of tourist to the capital and sudden increase in the number of network users on the eve of Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Khagani Graden and Sabir Garden were also connected to the “Free Wi-Fi” network.

Following this, the free internet service was launched at Akhundov Garden, Winter Park and Officers’ Garden.

During the summer months of last year, Huseyn Javid Park, Samad Vurgun Graden, Mughan Park and Fashion Avenue were connected to the “Free Wi-Fi” network within the framework of the “Public Internet” project.  Finally, Izmir Park, Narimanov Park and Dede Gorgud Park were provided with the public internet.

Baktelecom cooperates with Huawei, ZTE and Microtic companies within the project.

In total, around 300 access points were installed to provide internet access to public places.

People can easily access the “Free Wi-Fi” network via the modern system.

To use the service, one should select “Baktelecom” from the “Wi-Fi” list on his mobile device.  Then, he should type his mobile number into the relevant field. A finally, he should enter the code from the SMS into the appropriate field.

The SMS registration system ensures the security of internet connection, and only one (1) device can be connected to the free internet with the use of a code from SMS.
